January 2nd was National Pet Travel Safety Day, a perfect opportunity to consider your pet’s safety while traveling. Whether you’re planning a road trip or a short drive to the vet, ensuring your pet’s security is vital. Here are some helpful tips and tricks for traveling with pets, along with reasons to consider our pet care services if your pet prefers staying in the comfort of their own home.
Tips for Safe Pet Travel
1. Secure Your Pet Properly:
– Use a pet seat belt, harness or a secured pet carrier to prevent injuries.
– Ensure that the carrier is well-ventilated and adequately labeled with your contact details.
2. Plan Pet-Friendly Stops:
– Research pet-friendly rest stops and parks along your route for bathroom and exercise breaks.
– NEVER leave your pet unattended in a vehicle.
3. Pack an Essentials Kit:
– Bring along your pet’s food, water, bowls, and any medications. Enough for the tip and a few days extra in case of delays.
– Include familiar items like toys or blankets to make them feel comfortable and secure.
NOTE: If crossing the border, check that you are allowed to transport your type of pet food across. Often there are bans on certain brands or ingredients (chicken, lamp, beef etc)
4. Keep Identification Updated:
– Make sure your pet’s ID tag and microchip information are current.
– Carry recent photos of your pet in case they get lost.
5. Book Pet-Friendly Accommodation in Advance:
– Research and reserve accommodations that welcome pets, ensuring they have the necessary facilities for your furry friend. Make sure to pay attention to individual rules and fees
– Look for hotels or rentals that provide pet amenities like beds, bowls, and outdoor areas for exercise.
Bring Fido is a great resource but learn from my mistakes and still call the hotel or restaurant ahead of time to ensure the information is still accurate.
6. Mind Your Pet’s Comfort:
– Maintain your pet’s routine as much as possible regarding meals and rest.
– Monitor their behaviour and mood, and provide reassuring presence and comfort.
– It is important to keep in mind that just because you enjoy travelling with your pet and having them with you on vacation, it may not be easy for them.
