Is Your Cat Microchipped? What Every Pet Parent in Newmarket Should Know
Cats are curious by nature—and sometimes that curiosity leads them outside or away from home. June is National Microchipping Month, and it’s the perfect time to ask: if your pet got out would you have a quick and happy reunion?
What Is a Microchip?
A microchip is a tiny implant (about the size of a grain of rice) placed under your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades. It holds a unique ID number linked to your contact information in a pet recovery database.
It’s not a GPS, and it doesn’t track your pet, however it does dramatically increase the chances of being reunited if they’re found and brought to a vet or shelter.
Why Is Microchipping Important for Cats?
Many people think only dogs need microchips, but cats actually have a higher risk of becoming lost and not being returned home, especially if they’re indoor-only and not wearing a collar.
Life happens—someone leaves a door open, or a cat bolts when you are bringing in groceries. Microchipping is a safety net every pet parent should consider.
Myths vs. Facts
- Myth: Microchipping hurts your pet.
Fact: It’s a quick procedure that’s often done during routine vet visits. Most pets barely notice it. - Myth: My indoor cat doesn’t need a microchip.
Fact: Indoor cats can slip out unexpectedly. Microchipping is their best shot at making it home. - Myth: Once chipped, I’m all set.
Fact: You need to keep your contact information up to date with the microchip registry!
Where to Get Your Pet Microchipped
Check with your local vet or animal shelter—many offer microchipping at low cost or even during special events in June. Some local shelters in Newmarket and Aurora also provide free microchipping days—worth keeping an eye out for!
If your pet is already Microchipped – Please make sure the information on the microchip is up to date. Address, phone number etc. If you don’t know how to do this please contact where you got it done and they should be able to walk you through it.
