Before care begins, we will ask questions in our onboarding form to understand the full picture and clarify everything during our virtual meet and greet.
This information information includes:
Your dog’s known triggers and the distance they need from them
The early signs that your dog is becoming uncomfortable or overwhelmed
The exact words, cues and routines your dog already knows
The distraction or redirection techniques that work best for them
Familiar routes, quieter times of day and situations you normally avoid
Leash, harness and other handling instructions
Any bite, escape or safety history that could affect the care plan
This information is never to judge your dog. It gives us the detail we need to make safer, more responsible decisions.
The Meet & Greet Helps Us Assess the Right Care
The virtual Meet & Greet allows us to clarify the information, fill in any gaps and word it in a way that will make it easy for our team to follow. Included in the set up fee we can arrange for your dog to meet their primary dog walker in person and learn how your dog responds to a new person and gives you the opportunity to demonstrate their usual cues and routines. It is also the time to discuss the situations that concern you most and what a successful visit should look like for your dog.
How YPPS Tailors Walks for Reactive Dogs
When we determine that a walk is appropriate, the visit is shaped around the individual dog.
Every walk is one-on-one. Your dog receives the team member’s full attention and is never placed into a group walk.
Routes and pace are adapted. We consider your dog’s comfort, energy, health, preferences, known triggers and the conditions outside that day.
Dogs stay in their familiar neighbourhood. We do not routinely transport dogs, which helps us avoid adding an unnecessary change to the visit.
Familiar instructions and cues are followed. Our role is to support the approach you already use, not to test your dog’s limits or introduce a different training plan.
Care is based on patience and positive reinforcement. We focus on helping the dog feel safe and successful throughout the visit.
You receive reassurance afterwards. Detailed visit notes and photographs let you know how your dog did and what happened during the visit.
When a Neighbourhood Walk Is Not the Best Choice
A walk is not always the safest or happiest answer. Some dogs find the outside environment too stressful or unpredictable, even with careful planning. Conditions can also change from one day to the next. Professional care means being honest about that rather than forcing a walk because it was the service originally requested.
For a dog with access to a secure, fenced yard, Backyard Play may be a better fit. The visit can still include fresh air, a bathroom break, movement, enrichment, play and companionship, without exposing the dog to the triggers they may encounter on a neighbourhood walk.
Walks are not for every dog, but getting a break in the day is. We will recommend what is safest, happiest and most appropriate for each individual dog.
Can YPPS Walk Every Reactive Dog?
No professional should make that promise without learning about the individual dog. Many reactive dogs can enjoy one-on-one walks with an appropriate plan.
